Phasing from one location to the next wasn’t typically a complicated affair for a reaper. But the typical for Jack didn’t involve having a six-inch blade buried in his middle during the trip.

Jack found some relief while wincing up at a multi-storey brick building in the city’s old downtown core. It had been a bitch getting here. Jack had made a brief attempt at removing the knife himself before deciding it wasn’t a good idea. He was bleeding out energy already; if he yanked the blade out, lord knew how much more bleeding would occur.

With luck, the man who lived here could help. Jack couldn’t think of any other living being who could. Moments later, Jack stood hunched inside a darkened apartment, the sole light eking from gaps between the blackout drapes.

No one home, but he didn’t have long to wait.

Jack sensed the man nearby, the same way he knew when he was near an earthbound spirit. As a reaper, it was his business to read energy; there was no mistaking this man’s.

Footsteps sounded in the hallway outside as Jack collapsed into a kitchen chair. Elbows on knees and head bowed forward, he protected his middle as best he could as he sought a manageable position around the blade.

A key turned in the lock and the door opened. A light snapped on, and all movement at the entrance stopped dead. The man had seen him.

Jack lifted his head, far enough to peer up from beneath his brim. As ever, the man, though a living and breathing human, glowed an astounding white to Jack’s reaper eyes.

Despite his predicament, a corner of Jack’s mouth turned up. No wonder the dead always found Sullivan Gray.

Jack offered a small nod in greeting. “Sully.”

“What are you doing here?” Curious rather than anxious at the sudden intrusion. Not how most people greeted Death. But then, Sully wasn’t most people.

“You alone?” Jack asked.

“Not for long. Sarah forgot her work notebook. She’s on her way back here to find it. What’s wrong?”

Jack pulled aside his duster to reveal the problem. “Need a little help.”

Sully’s brows shot up his forehead, and his jaw dropped. “How did this happen?”

“Job went bad,” Jack said. “Demons.” He left it at that, not wanting to work at defining feeders for Sully. The term “demons” was close enough.

Sully closed the door and rushed over, dropping a set of keys on the counter on the way. “Dad and Aiden?”

“They weren’t with me.”

Sully knelt in front of Jack to study the wound. “So they’re safe?”

Jack understood the worry. Sully hadn’t known his birth parents growing up. Flynn Braddock had found him and taken him in, giving him a home and a family who loved him like blood. For all intents and purposes, Flynn was Sully’s father, Aiden his brother.

“They’re fine, far as I know,” Jack told Sully. “They’re on the other side for the time being.”

Again, he skipped further explanation. He didn’t want to get bogged down in the story about Flynn’s recent injury.

Sully’s gaze met Jack’s.
